                               OPEN

Ordinary People Extraordinary Needs

What is OPEN?
OPEN is a program under the umbrella of the York County Council of Churches serving families and individuals that are affected or infected by HIV/AIDS. OPEN provides transportation services, education and fellowship events, spiritual enrichment- pastoral care and buddy care for adults, children and families. OPENS's friendly and comfortable setting affords a place for folks to find encouragement and support beyond the clinical setting of healthcare providers. OPEN is a part of the collaboration, "Caring Together", along with York Health Corporation and WELLSPAN. These agencies work together from doctors of the York Hospital Community Health Center seeking additional services for their patients.

Who is OPEN?
Who formed OPEN? A group of individuals, commited to address the issue of
AIDS in York County from a faith perspective, convened in September
of 1992. In June of 1994 the ecumenical group became a working committee of
the York County Council of Churches. Our name, Ordinary People
Extraordinary Needs, describes us as servant people and also describes those
we wish to serve.

Who governs OPEN? Under the umbrella of the Council, the Board of
Directors provides goverance for all ministries and programs. The Board of
Directors is elected by clergy and lay representatives of all member
congregations. In addition OPEN has an Advisory Committee bringing
leadership and support to the program.

Very simply put: We are persons of faith seeking to provide services for our
clients.

Does the need continue to exist?

  • Each new generation is at risk of this terrible disease.
  • There are approximately 380 AIDS cases in our county. (Not counting HIV+)
  • About 10% of all people diagnosed with AIDS in the U.S. are age 50 or
    older.
  • HIV can cause homelessness, and homelessness can bring on HIV.
  • As of end of 2002 the Center for Disease Control and Prevention
estimates 850,000 to 950,00 U.S. residents are living with HIV infection,
one quarter of who are unaware of their infection.
  • Approximately 40,000 new HIV infections occur each year in the U.S.

James 2:17
"For God will not show mercy when he judges the person who has not been
merciful: but mercy triumphs over judgment."

How is OPEN financially supported?
Grants have been the primary source of support. Other sources of support are
"Friends of OPEN", buisness sponsors, and fund-raising activities.
